JŪRAS PRELŪDIJAS UN FŪGAS. II Hammond ērģeļu festivāla atklāšanas koncerts

On May 15 at 19:00, at the Liepāja Lutera Church, the concert program “Sea Preludes and Fugues” will open the 2nd Hammond Organ Festival – a musical journey where the music of Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach meets the freedom of jazz and the breath of the sea. Like waves that constantly change their form, the flow of Bach’s preludes and the polyphony of his fugues gain new colors and moods in this program.

The program will feature jazz-style arrangements of J. S. Bach’s works created by composers Atis Andersons and Santa Šillere. In these, the strict architecture of Baroque polyphony intertwines with the freedom of improvisation, rich harmonies, and rhythmic undulations, allowing familiar motifs to unfold like a fresh sea breeze – at times calm and clear, at times sparkling and full of motion.

Three outstanding artists of the Latvian jazz scene will perform in the concert. Hammond organist and composer Atis Andersons combines the depth of academic music with the spontaneity of jazz in his creative work, creating expressive and nuanced interpretations. Singer and composer Santa Šillere, through her arrangements, gives Bach’s music a new harmonic space and refined musical dramaturgy. Meanwhile, percussionist and composer Andris Buiķis, with his sensitive and diverse sense of rhythm, brings pulsating energy to the program – like the rhythm of the sea, always in motion.

The concert program “Sea Preludes and Fugues” invites listeners to experience Bach’s music in a different way – as a soundscape where Baroque forms, jazz improvisation, and the presence of the Liepāja sea merge into a single breath.

Visitor information: The church has wheelchair-accessible entry from the side; however, the concert takes place on the balcony on the 2nd floor. It is possible to listen to the concert from the hall on the 1st floor.
